When identifying your niche market, try to find things that are already popular and identify what people are already buying. This is very important and don't let it put you off if, at first, the niche appears too competitive. Competition means people are making money and that's exactly where you want be!
Keep your eyes and ears open and remember seasonal trends. There are many places you can look for find out what is popular, right now. Ebay, Amazon.com and magazine.com are just few worth mentioning. Use Google trends and visit relevant forums. When identifying your niche market you are trying to establish the who, why and what in a given niche.
The Who
A good place to start is adlab.msn.com You can get all kinds of general data on your potential target audience.
Click on the demographic prediction in adlab.msn.com and type in keywords relevant to your niche. Don't forget to check out the age demographic as well. This will give you a great breakdown of 'the who' in a particular niche.
The Why
The key here is to establish people's 'hot buttons' what will really trigger their buying impulse. Why people are desperate for a particular product or service. Is it fashionable, the latest thing, a status item, a must have or something that will solve a particular problem or satisfy a desperate need.
The What
For product selection and keywords, start with what's selling well and remember the power of product names and branding.
Go back to adlab.msn.com and check out the "Detecting Online Commercial Intention" tool. It shows a prediction for how likely someone is to make some sort of purchase when typing in a term...pretty important information, right?
Play around with that a bit...I think you might see some interesting results.
